NYC in the Fall: Highlight Attractions

I recently visited New York city for a five day fall trip with my sister who had never been. While that isn’t a lot of time to see too much, it was the perfect amount of time to hit some of the highlights for some NYC newbies.

Our trip spanned from November 15-20th, strategically before the holiday prices went into effect, but late enough that a lot of holiday shows already started and the weather was still great for walking around. Just a few days after we left, the snow and ice storms started!

Here are some of the attraction highlights:

  • Walk Through Central Park
  • Visit the Museum of Natural History
  • See a show on Broadway (we saw Aladdin)
  • Went to the opening show of The Rockettes
  • New York City Hot Cocoa and Carols Holiday Cruise that featured a jazz band for live music
  • One World Trade Center Oberservatory
  • 9/11 Memorial – Truly a moving experience to see in person

Note the links in this post are for informational use and I do not earn from any of these links.

While we could have easily spent multiple days at the museum, we got to see a lot in the few hours we spent there. Some highlights for me were the Northwest Coast indigenous section (my heritage), the dinosaurs, and the giant amethyst in the gems and minerals.

The hot cocoa holiday cruise was festive and cozy

Everyone we talked to had a very strong opinion of which pizzeria is “the best” in NYC, so we had to check out a few and see for ourselves. My favorite ended up being Rubirosa for the flavor in the sauce (great news, they ship their sauces directly to you! I’m not affiliated with them but I am obsessed with their vodka sauce). Lucali’s and John’s were a close second for me. If you’re going to check out pizza places, be prepared to stand in line. We got all of ours to go due to the wait times. At Lucali’s, due to the holiday weekend, they only had a short dinner service and we were lucky to even be able to get it to go. We met the owner while we were waiting, and he was the nicest most humble guy.

Bemelmans Bar : Amazing Drinks & Fresh Oysters

Some food and drink highlights:

  1. Get drinks at Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel (of course I had to see where Jackie Kennedy posed for her famous photo at the Carlyle)
  2. Get seafood at Crave Fish Bar after the Museum of Natural History
  3. Check out and rate some famous pizza places (we did Rubirosa, Joe’s, John’s on Bleeker, and Lucali’s)
  4. Anita Gelato
Anita Gelato was just as delicious as it was adorable, that pink fish scale floor tile is everything

On the last day before heading home, we went across the river to SoJo Spa in New Jersey for a day of relaxation and rejuvenation before flying back. After walking 25,000+ steps a day, a day to recover before heading back was amazing!
