If you have never remodeled or designed a space before, lighting can seem daunting. There are three basic types of lighting to consider when picking items to properly illuminate your space. By layering these three types of lights, you’ll create a more dynamic space. This is the first post of several that will dive into a broad overview of how to light your space.
Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting is the lighting that evenly lights a room or outdoor space. This could be your recessed can lights, surface mount ceiling lights, floor lamps or table lamps. Generally, you want enough of these so that there are no shadows or dark areas in your room. Putting the lights on dimmers allows for more control of the ambient lighting, and can set the tone more appropriately for a party or everyday activity.
Task Lighting

Task lighting is any light that is meant for a specific activity. This could be a desk lamp to appropriately light your workspace, or it could be your under-cabinet lights in the kitchen that help light your prep area when cooking. Think about the types of activities you will do in each room and consider what type of lighting will help you achieve your lighting needs.
Accent Lighting
Accent lighting is usually the pretty lighting. This could be a picture light that is pointed at a beautiful painting. It could be toekick or above the cabinet lights that create some drama when you dim your ambient lighting. This could be your pendant lights at an island, or a sparkly light in your foyer. This includes island pendants and dining chandeliers which serve a dual purpose. While accent lighting does provide some ambient lighting, the main purpose of the light is to create visual interest.
