One of my favorite places to visit for design and food is Los Angeles. I had the pleasure of spending a friend’s birthday weekend in Malibu and we made a few reservations in the city to celebrate. We always look for a place that has great design and delicious food that is off the beaten path. Ka’teen is a breathtaking 5,000 square foot outdoor-only restaurant located in Hollywood off the Tommie Hotel. It was designed by Studio Collective and styled by Bernadette Blanc. The vibe is super tropical and cozy. The cuisine is inspired by acclaimed Chef Wes Avila’s take on the food in the coastal region of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Chef Avila has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation and the Michelin Guide and has won accolades for his restaurant in the Arts District in LA. What attracted me to this restaurant is that the concept is a bit like a hidden oasis in the middle of the city. From the street, there is no signage for the restaurant, and it is tucked back from Selma Avenue through a tunnel of greenery.

The flavor profiles were delicious. We got a variety of items and were happy with everything. They had a wide variety of cocktails so there was something for everyone. I tried the CosteƱito drink, which is cilantro and serrano pepper infused grey goose vodka, del maguey mezcal, piloncillo, and charred pineapple. It was smokey and sweet and everything I was looking for. The ceviche was super fresh and delicious. The pork wrapped in banana leaves completely melted in your mouth. The sauces were incredible. The staff was very friendly, attentive and helpful. If you find yourself making a trip to the area, it’s definitely worth booking ahead to experience this restaurant.
